Episode 2 – Caio Borralho: From Teaching Math to Dominating in the UFC

In the second episode of our special series about the Fighting Nerds, we explore the inspiring journey of Caio Borralho — known as the “King of the Nerds” — who left behind a promising academic career to chase his dream in MMA.

From the classroom to the Octagon, Caio’s path proves that strategy, intellect, and heart can lead to greatness in the world of combat sports.

📘 Early Life: The Chemistry Student and Math Teacher

Born on January 16, 1993, in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, Caio was raised in an academic environment. Inspired by his grandfather, a mathematics professor, Caio began tutoring math and chemistry at the age of 15 and later enrolled in Industrial Chemistry at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA).

During college, he declined a prestigious internship at Ambev, one of the largest brewing companies in Latin America, choosing instead to follow his passion for martial arts.

🥋 Martial Arts Journey: From Judo to MMA

Caio began practicing judo at age 6, coached by Sensei Emílio Moreira. He became a multiple-time state and national champion.

After losing a judo match by armbar, he was encouraged to add Brazilian jiu-jitsu to his training. Later, he also picked up Muay Thai, building a well-rounded base that would serve him in his MMA career.

🥊 Transition to MMA and Birth of Fighting Nerds

At 18 years old, Caio began training MMA seriously and had his amateur debut in 2014, fighting out of the Dojô James Adler in São Luís.

To pursue MMA professionally, he relocated to São Paulo, where he co-founded the now-famous Fighting Nerds team with coach Pablo Sucupira.

Together, they crafted a training philosophy based on analytical thinking, precision, and scientific principles, breaking away from traditional methods.

🧠 Fighting Nerds Philosophy: Science Meets Combat

The Fighting Nerds aren’t just a fight team — they represent a mindset. Caio and Pablo challenged the stereotypes of what it means to be a fighter.

📌 Their now-iconic lensless glasses became a symbol of intelligence and critical thinking in the fight world — a celebration of brains and brawn coexisting.

🏆 Breakthrough on the Global Stage: UFC Debut

In 2021, Caio appeared on Dana White’s Contender Series, securing a UFC contract after two standout wins.

Since then, he has remained undefeated in the UFC’s middleweight division, earning praise for his calculated fight IQ, technical grappling, and calm demeanor under pressure.

💬 Legacy and Impact

More than just an athlete, Caio Borralho has become a role model for young fighters, students, and "nerds" around the world. His story proves that intellect and discipline are not obstacles in combat — they are superpowers.

From teaching chemistry to submitting world-class opponents, Caio continues to inspire and redefine what a fighter can be.
